What are your chances of getting a successful promotion?
Every year, hundreds of talented people get passed over for promotion. Some don’t even get past the first stage, especially in a competitive promotion process where there are plenty of high performers but only a handful of business cases.
Then there are people that get the promotion, but something goes unexpectedly wrong and within a year they’re out. Maybe they weren’t clear on their vision or maybe they didn’t lead their team or manage their stakeholders. Perhaps they didn’t have the right skills or capabilities, or they didn’t garner enough support. If it goes really wrong, it can ruin their chances of future promotion – they might be moved to another role, get demoted, move or resign. The people who decided to promote them conclude that they just weren’t ready after all.
Promotions don’t just fall into your lap!
The idea of advancing your career with a promotion often seems like the next natural step. Stepping up in responsibility can be an exciting time, but it’s often also a challenging one. The process itself can be arduous with lots of hurdles to jump through, requiring hours of hard work, self-reflection and a clear strategy. You’ll need to show your ability to lead, articulate your compelling vision, and demonstrate your readiness for the demands of the next role.
Within professional services (which is my background), there are various sets of papers to complete, including development plans and personal business cases. Then there are mock panel interviews, readiness reviews and sobering final interviews where you can expect a good grilling. It’s not something you can blag your way through!
You’ll need to dedicate the time on top of your busy schedule to make sure you’re really ready for the demands of the next level. You’ll need to be resilient, to be able to respond to challenging feedback, and fully prepared to answer the question ‘why you?’
- How can you make sure your time and energy will be worth the effort?
- How can you demonstrate your readiness with confidence, grace and presence?
- How can you increase your chances of success for such an important career milestone?
Here are some questions to get you thinking about your promotion and how ready you are right now:
How did you get on? Did you have clear and articulate answers for all of them? Perhaps you realised there are some areas you haven’t quite got covered? Maybe that’s where I can help…

Rachael challenged me to ensure I pulled out the best examples and articulate myself well. Most important for me was learning to talk un-self-consciously about myself and my examples. Rachael worked with me to ensure I put myself forward in the best light, confidently.
